Finger Painting

One of the artists I admire for his paintings of Christ is Simon Dewey. This is his painting called, "Peace Be Still."

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, will always calm the storms in our life when we have faith in Him. We need not do anything alone because He is in control. I love how Simon Dewey captured the emotion and experience of this instance found in the Bible, as well as the contrast and details. This piece is not the greatest, but it shows the different techniques that can be done in Photoshop. For all of you who are learning Photoshop there are four techniques I specifically used while creating these objects for my digital painting self portrait.
1) The water I created by first painting down the colors I wanted, not really in any specific order, and then I used the noise filter. (Keep it at a low setting because if you increase the noise too high, you will get more colors than you'll want.) Afterward, I used the smudge tool.
2) The tree: I painted it with Photoshop and that was the more difficult part. However, I needed an increase in contrast to bring out the shadows and highlights, and therefore used the burn and dodge tools. Easy.
3) With the wall and flowers I used the lasso tool (specifically the polygonal lasso tool), which can be smoothed afterward with the paintbrush. To create a stone texture-look I once again used the noise filter.

This image is a design I created for a logo. It is not my favorite, but it is better than the original. I believe I did over 50 versions for this logo until I came up with this one.
